We are a growing society with a wide cross section of members from novice to more experienced observers on hand for help and advice if needed.

Meetings are friendly, informal and relaxed.  We aim to bring a grassroots understanding of astronomy and the beautiful night sky to anyone interested. Members can hear talks given by guest speakers and our own members on all aspects of astronomy usually with a slide show.

We  hold observing sessions at local dark sites [weather dependant] where you can look through members telescopes or have help using your own equipment if needed. Sessions start with a naked eye tour of the sky. If you share an interest in learning more about the night sky [and the daytime sun] why not pay us a visit.

Dave Powell MBE  was a founding member of  and served as secretary of  Cardiff astronomical society for over 40 years. He was  awarded an MBE in 2012 for – Services to science in the community.

The current Barry society was founded by Dave Powell MBE in 2016,   with Tom Easton serving as secretary and Yvonne Llewellyn as society  treasurer, its foundation being requested  by local people during Dave’s  researches into  the original Barry society.

Formed in 1910 the original Barry society was  still active until  1923 with prominent members ,such as Dr Percy Billups 1889-1938, a keen observer serving as president. Arthur Mee, another influential member born 1860-1926. in Aberdeen.  Moving  to Llanelli and then to Cardiff he joined the Western Mail remaining as assistant editor until his death. A keen amateur  he used an 81/2 ” Calver reflector, viewing the Moon and Mars making many detailed drawings of both. His book  “Observational astronomy” became  a very popular work.

The council granted for a yearly rent of one shilling a piece of land on which to build an  observatory.  We believe its location was Ty Newydd road. Originally to be built of wood a request that it be brick built was approved providing the society paid for it .It was decided a wooden structure would be just fine. It was opened in 1914 by Arthur Mee who donated the telescope. Was this the 81/2 “Calver?

A 1950s aerial photograph shows the observatory in the grounds of the teachers training college on Buttrills hill. Grid Ref  ST 112 49-68324. We possess a brass plaque which reads –“The Arthur Mee telescope, presented by Arthur Mee to the Barry astronomical society 1914”  The plaque, found and kept many years ago by Mr Gareth Tyley who explains –“It occurred to me this was important. Something associated with  Barry’s past” What became of the telescope and observatory. Was it scrapped or sold?

Two of Barry’s senior citizens remember during WW II  a range finder operating  from the observatory –assisting the harbour guns.
